Ellipsis Flash Collection Competition 2023

Our third annual flash collection competition is closed to submissions. The long-list, short-list and overall winner are listed below.

Winner: A Pillow Of White Roses by Christine Collinson
Judges notes: Although this collection of historical flash fiction is the most traditional of the submissions I read, I was immediately taken with it. To me, this collection represents a flash fiction writer at the top of their game. It’s extremely polished but there is still variety in the voice and tone. What really stood out was the writing itself. Every story has such beautiful and precise language, such carefully thought out imagery and details, and I enjoyed reading every piece.

Runner Up: The Monster Claire by Donna L. Greenwood
Judges notes: This collection definitely made me sit up and take notice. A striking telling of women’s lives which is violent, vibrant, and utterly unique. At times a difficult read, but compelling nonetheless. I particularly enjoyed the myths, monsters and folklore entwined in the stories.
